About Davis Cup
What could be more fun than 125 nations in the world taking part in a tennis game every year? The idea of having a tennis match
between nations was first conceived by four students in U S who wanted to challenge students from Great Britain to a tennis match.
That was back in 1900. Named after Dwight Davis who first devised the rules and donated the trophy for the match, the tournament
expanded from the original two countries to include other countries also. Now the countries from the six continents take part in
this tennis tournament, competing with each other and vying for the title of Davis Cup champion.
As of 2009, 125 nations have taken part in this tournament. Throughout its history different formats have been used and new rules
implemented. Since 1981 a 16 nation World Group was formed, meaning the top 16 countries in the world qualified for the playoffs
and the finals. The rest of the countries are placed in three regional zones, those being Americans, Asia/Oceania and Europe/Africa
where they compete in different groups. The World Group games are spread over the year, usually on the weekends, with first round
taking place in March, quarter finals in July, semifinals in September and the finals in December. Over the years USA and Australia
have proven their capabilities by winning 32 and 28 times respectively. More recently other countries especially Sweden, France and
Spain have emerged as powerhouses.
